Hardware Requirements

FAQs

Basic information is provided below. For further information, see Gene Codes' Sequencher information pages for FAQs, release notes, tutorials, installation instructions, and other information.

Macintosh

Minimum requirements:

  • Apple Macintosh SE or better
  • Hard disk drive with 8 MB storage for program and supporting files plus enough to store all files and projects
  • 16 MB available memory
  • OS 8.6 - 9.2, OSX 10.1.3 or better (older versions may also run on OS 7.5 and above)
  • 16 MB RAM, 8 MB storage for program and supporting files, enough memory to store all files and projects

Sequencher is accelerated for the Power Macintosh but runs on 68K Macs as well. For most universal use the demo version is not accelerated for the Power Mac. Except for the most demanding tasks such as contig assembly of a large project, you won't notice a difference in speed, as even in 68K emulation the speed is impressive.

Sequencher and OS X

Version 4.2 and above of Sequencher run natively under OS X. Sequencher runs under Tiger (OSX 10.4 but if you upgrade to Tiger you might need to reinstall Sequencher for it to run properly.

Note: Apple has reported significant problems with Version 10.1 of OSX and recommends upgrading. Gene Codes does not support 10.1.

For more details on the OSX version, see the Release Notes (Version 4.5) (pdf file: 331 kb).

Windows

Sequencher for Windows PC is now available. Note that the price is approximately 42% higher than the Mac version due to third-party royalty payments. Minimum requirements as of Sequencher for PC/Windows version 4.0.5 are:

  • For parallel port dongle: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • For USB dongle, stand-alone version: Windows ME/2000/XP
  • For USB dongle, network version: Windows 2000/XP
  • Pentium class chip or better
  • RAM: 16 MB for Windows 95/98 or 32 MB for Windows NT/2000/ME/XP
  • Free hard disk space of 8 MB for program and supporting files, plus enough space to store all files and projects, but not more than 2048 MB total memory.

Dongles & Ports

Sequencher is sold with a hardware key ("dongle"), which must be attached to a port on your computer for the program to function in other than demo mode. For Stand-Alone versions, the dongle must be on the computer being used. For Network versions, it is on one computer on your network. Since the dongle is required, your computer must have the appropriate port to fit the dongle:

  • Windows versions have a parallel port dongle for older configurations, or a USB dongle for newer ones (recent Windows versions only: see above for supported versions).
  • Mac versions have an ADB dongle for older Macs, or a USB dongle for newer Macs.
